Bowler and the Bulldog return to North Africa for the Morocco Desert Challenge Rally & Bowler Cup
11 Apr 2018
Hot off the heels of an impressive 1-2 finish at the Tuareg Rally, Bowler heads back to North Africa for the Morocco Desert Challenge (MDC) – the second largest rally-raid race in the world – with the addition of The Bowler Cup and €5000 prize.
Bowler has enjoyed the adventures and successes of extreme off road racing for over three decades with Bowler designed and manufactured legendary cars, and heads to Morocco for its second race of 2018 to support Bowler Bulldog customers with a full racing service and support package.
The week long coast-to-coast endurance race covers over 2,400km and features the initial stunning 77km Plage Blanche beach ‘prologue’ stage on the Atlantic, followed by 7 further stages – one per day – winding their way along a new route across Morocco’s rugged terrain, from the south coast near Guelmim, to Saidia and the Mediterranean shores in the north.
Of the 30 trucks, 29 SSVs, 53 motorbikes and 63 cars lining up at the start, 10 vehicles are Bowler cars from past and present including the Tomcat, Wildcat and latest Bowler patented Cross Sector Platform (CSP) based Bulldog.
With the introduction of a subcategory in the official MDC ranking called the The Bowler Cup, participating Bowler drivers have the chance of winning €5000 to spend on original Bowler parts, accessories or modifications. The prize will go to the winning Bowler competitor within the MDC event.
The rolling format of the rally means the vehicle service and bivouac camping areas change location every day. Coupled with map-book navigation as opposed to GPS, fast tracks, technical sections, vast African plains, the famous Erg Chebbi sand dunes and salt lakes of the legendary Dakar stages, the conditions and environment pose physical, mental and logistical challenges for vehicles, competitors and service teams.
Andrew Chester, Bowler’s Racing Manager commented, “We’re looking forward to supporting more Bulldog customers at the Morocco Desert Challenge but it’s also great to see past Bowler models still going strong and on the entry list. The MDC is a faster race overall than the Tuareg Rally with more stone and gravel sections, and navigation is harder with the use of a traditional road book rather than satellite navigation. On the truck we carry 1000 litres of fuel, 8 tonnes of spares, 20 wheels and tyres for each Bulldog, 5 full sets of shock absorbers per car and numerous mud flaps, which are usually the largest casualty from a rally, but vital for car, competitor and spectator safety.
“The competitors will be racing up to 10 hours each day and it’s imperative they set off early as this really is a race against the dark on each day. In the pitch black of the Moroccan desert with only your headlights to illuminate a short distance ahead, your speed has to be dramatically reduced and you lose reference points due to the vastness and unpredictability of the terrain, so it’s not difficult to get lost. Our Bowler customer drivers will meet up with the team each evening for refuelling, service and hospitality, where they enjoy the camaraderie of the Bowler team and service area evening environment, often as much as the racing. The Bulldog is a highly capable car and proven winning package and we’re looking for our participation in the MDC to be a continuation of the CSP and Bulldog’s testing and development, as well as the next opportunity for our customer drivers and navigators to progress and hone their endurance racing skills.”
The Bowler Bulldog is the first of the marque’s cars to be based on the company’s new and patented Cross Sector Platform (CSP). This revolutionary rolling chassis has been developed over the last three years in a project backed by the UK Government, offering a multi-use vehicle platform which can be utilised for a range of on and off road vehicle applications including emergency response, security and protection, land and estates management, sport and recreation, filming, utility, exploration and more.
Bowler also utilises its extensive expertise to offer Driver Training and ‘Arrive & Drive’ packages for those who would like to compete in a Rally Raid race, but prefer not to purchase their own car. Competing with Bowler as part of the factory team, be it as an owner driver or Arrive & Drive entrant, provides the best opportunity to fulfil your off road adventure ambitions and reach the finish safely with the best experience possible.
The Bowler factory team will be supporting Bulldog competitors in a further three Rally Raid events this year including:
- Baja Aragon, Spain in July
- Rallye du Maroc, Morocco in October
- Africa Eco Race starting in Monte Carlo and ending in Dakar, Senegal, in December
